National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6 to May 12, 2024, and each year throughout May. This year, the American Nurses Association has selected the theme "Nurses Make the Difference" to encourage nurses, other healthcare professionals, employers, community leaders, and the public to recognize and promote the vast contributions and positive impact of nurses.
Thank you to the incredible nurses at BHN for providing clinical excellence and for helping those we serve live their healthiest and happiest lives! Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate you for caring for our community every day!
To gain insights into the nursing profession, we asked our nurses to share what they find most enjoyable and rewarding in this challenging yet fulfilling career. Here are their perspectives.
I enjoy that nursing is a challenging career that allows me to use my skills to help others. The most important part of my job as an APRN is my willingness to be a lifelong learner. Healthcare is complex, and constantly changing.
As an APRN or RN it is imperative to stay up to date on current practices to provide safe and accurate care. The most rewarding aspect of my job is being able to see the difference I'm making in my client's lives and health outcomes.
- Kristen Guyott, MSN, PMHNP-BC, Outpatient Psychology
I enjoy making an impact in people's lives. We are here on what is sometimes considered the worst day of their life and I meet them with a smile on my face and let them know they are safe with us. I love the puzzle that is nursing sometimes. I love working towards finding a diagnosis to a problem and helping people find a path towards to their health. I enjoy having to use so many skills in my nursing and having to trust my gut. I love collaborating with the team and creating patient centered care for each of our patients.
What I find to be most imprortant part of my job is advocating for my patients, ensuring their safety, and giving the best care I possibly can. Teamwork is essential in providing coordinated, high-quality care. This is becoming more important as our patients are experiencing comorbidities with increasing complexities.
What I find to be most reqarding is when a patient walks out these doors in better physical and mental health than how they arrived to us. I love seeing them smile and stating how they have motivation to continuing working towards long term sobriety.
- Johanna Bradley, RN, New View, Nurse Supervisor
I enjoy interacting with clients and staff. To me, the most important part of my job is dealing with clients and knowing I am helping them in some aspect of their life when assistance was needed. Seeing clients succeed, or just improve to the best of their abilities is what I find most rewarding.
- Deborah Ramos, RN, Adult CCS
What I enjoy most about nursing is teaching patients with a non-judgmental approach and having them teach-back, to see how well I met them where they were able to receive the information.
What I find most rewarding is being able to share information with clients to better care for themselves. Sometimes it is about a disease process, sometimes it is about medication, sometimes it is reframing something to the positive. I believe that having empathy for others is most important part of my job.
- Jodi Kashouh MS RN-BC, CNL, Holyoke Respite
What I enjoy about nursing is taking care of the clients, advocating for them, and promoting health awareness. To me, being caring and compassionate is the most important part of my job and making a difference in the client's lives is the most rewarding aspect of nursing.
- Akua A. Kyei, RN, Residential Support
I enjoy being able to make a positive difference in the world and my community. To me, the most important part of my job is listening to and collaborating with my clients on treatment approaches that best meet their needs.
The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that my contribution to someone's care made a difference in the quality of their life.
- Kim Gage, PMHNP, Outpatient Psychology
